Prepare the qualification evidence requested

Ask the institution and relevant mission which translations, authentication, Declaration of Value or CIMEA statements are needed. Do not assume one document automatically replaces another.

Complete Universitaly pre-enrolment

Follow the official academic-year instructions, select the correct institution and course, and upload the requested records. Obtain institutional validation and retain the summary required for your application.

03Funds, housing & insuranceBring the supporting evidence together.

Document funds and their source

Prepare available financial means, account history and supporting income or family records according to your mission’s checklist. Distinguish confirmed scholarship coverage from costs you must fund yourself.

Arrange accommodation and health cover

Obtain accepted housing evidence and an insurance certificate matching the current checklist’s benefits, territory and validity. Check the cover rather than relying on a generic policy name.

04Application & identityFollow the correct mission’s submission route.

Submit through the correct application channel

Identify the mission responsible for your residence and use its authorised appointment route. Review the national study-visa form, original records, current fees and biometric instructions.

Financial evidence & application costs

Build a budget with every part in view.

Prepare the financial evidence for your visa category and academic year. Keep tuition, housing, health cover, travel and arrival costs in the same plan.

University-enrolment visa · one year

Know the published financial benchmark.

Academic years 2026–2027 and 2027–2028€10,179.85

This is the MAECI university-enrolment visa minimum, not a quote for the full cost of studying. Other study categories can use a different calculation.

Which evidence should support the funds?

Follow your mission’s current requirements for statement history, available balances, income and the source of funds. Document family support, confirmed awards or accepted loan funding as applicable.

A pending scholarship is not a confirmed award. MAECI does not accept bank guarantees or insurance guarantee policies as suitable study-funding proof.

Keep application costs separate.

Published national study-visa fee

€50

Confirm the current local-currency amount, payment method and any exemption. Authorised service-centre charges are additional.

Documents, cover & arrival

Budget beyond the visa payment.

Allow for required translations, qualification checks, insurance and travel, plus residence-permit and related charges after arrival. Check current amounts before payment.

The details that matter

Admission, visa and residence: who decides?

Provider admission

  • Academic qualifications and programme-specific subject preparation
  • Teaching-language evidence and any selection assessment
  • Offer acceptance, tuition and scholarship conditions

Study visa & residence

  • Correct category, passport and required pre-enrolment records
  • Accepted financial means, accommodation and insurance evidence
  • Application, identity checks and any further consular assessment

The institution assesses admission. The Italian mission decides the visa, and the competent Italian authorities handle residence permission after arrival. Admission or tuition payment does not guarantee either decision.

Explore Italy admission requirements
Universitaly validation and academic-year deadlines
  • Use the official Universitaly procedure for non-EU applicants abroad who need a visa for the relevant higher-education course. Check the current academic-year instructions for your category.
  • Follow your institution’s submission and validation steps. Keep the validated summary and any references requested by the mission.
  • Track institutional, funding, pre-enrolment and visa deadlines individually. There is no single end-July deadline that can safely be applied to every programme and mission.
  • If your course, institution or start date changes, ask how the pre-enrolment record and visa application should be updated.
Declaration of Value and CIMEA checks
  • A Declaration of Value provides information about a foreign qualification; it is not an admission decision or automatic recognition.
  • CIMEA comparability describes a qualification’s level; verification addresses its authenticity. Neither binds the institution’s recognition assessment.
  • Ask your institution and mission which documents or accepted alternatives apply. Do not purchase both routes or assume universal interchangeability.
  • Check document originals, translations, apostilles or legalisation and submission arrangements for the country where your qualification was awarded.
English and Italian language evidence
  • Use the exact programme’s teaching-language requirements, accepted tests, scores and exemptions. There is no universal IELTS score for every Italian degree.
  • For Italian-taught study, confirm the required level and how proficiency is assessed under the current procedure.
  • A medium-of-instruction letter is useful only where accepted. Confirm any separate language evidence requested for the visa file.
  • Practical Italian can help with everyday administration and work, including on an English-taught course.
Financial means and your full study budget
  • The MAECI university-enrolment visa minimum is €10,179.85 for one year for academic years 2026–2027 and 2027–2028. Other study categories use their own applicable calculation.
  • Follow the responsible mission’s current evidence checklist, including the required statement period and documentation of available funds and income.
  • Keep tuition, housing, insurance, travel and arrival costs visible in your full budget. A visa minimum is not a complete cost estimate.
  • A pending regional scholarship application does not establish confirmed funding. Record the amount, period and actual benefits of any award.
Family funds, loans and bank guarantees
  • Document personal or family resources through the account, relationship and income evidence requested for your case. Explain the source of significant recent transfers with genuine supporting records.
  • Where education-loan funding is accepted, check the disbursement and account-evidence requirements. A sanction letter alone may not satisfy the mission.
  • MAECI states that bank guarantees or insurance guarantee policies are not suitable proof of adequate resources for study stays.
  • An unrelated person’s hospitality or support commitment is not decisive financial proof. Confirm the relevant mission’s requirements before relying on it.
Accommodation and health insurance
  • Use the housing evidence accepted for your application: for example a university residence confirmation, lease or documented host arrangement, subject to the checklist.
  • An application for a residence place is not the same as a confirmed allocation. Check the dates and address covered by your evidence.
  • Confirm insurance benefits, geographical coverage, start date and duration with the responsible mission. Medical treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation requirements may appear in its checklist.
  • Arrange continued health cover after arrival and confirm whether private insurance or an available health-service registration route fits your circumstances. Do not assume free automatic public coverage.
Family applications and residence requirements
  • A student visa does not automatically include a spouse or children. Confirm the correct accompanying-family, reunification or other eligible route for each person.
  • Standard family reunification now includes a two-year lawful, continuous residence requirement in relevant cases, with exceptions including reunification with minor children. Confirm how the current rules apply to your route.
  • Income, suitable housing, relationship records and any required authorisation are assessed separately. There is no universal €6,000-per-person supplement.
  • Check family plans before committing to travel or accommodation; the student’s own financial minimum does not establish family eligibility.
Student employment: weekly and annual limits
Confirm the conditions attached to your permission before working.
Study-permit employmentGenerally up to 20 hours per week and 1,040 hours per year.
Your conditionsCheck the permission attached to your valid study permit before accepting work.
Employment formalitiesArrange the required tax-code, contract and registration records.
Study and fundingEmployment is not guaranteed and expected wages should not replace your study-funding evidence.
Job search and conversion after study
  • Eligible graduates can apply for a job-search residence route, generally for up to one year, subject to the qualifying award and other conditions. Apply through the correct procedure in time.
  • Since the 2023 reform, eligible conversion from a valid study or training permit to work permission is outside the annual Flows Decree quotas. It still requires the relevant employment or self-employment conditions and an application.
  • Check your individual route, documents and permit validity before relying on conversion. A job offer alone is not the completed authorisation.
  • Graduation does not guarantee a job, continued permission or permanent residence. Build skills and a realistic employment plan alongside your studies.
Processing delays and deferral planning
  • Use the responsible mission’s published processing information and your institution’s latest enrolment date. Appointment availability, document checks and additional requests can affect the timeline.
  • Do not rely on a guaranteed two-to-eight-week outcome or one national deadline. Start qualification checks and evidence preparation early.
  • If a decision may arrive after the course starts, obtain written advice from the institution about late arrival or deferral and check what application updates are required.
  • Keep application references and respond through official channels. Avoid making non-refundable arrangements based only on an expected decision date.
Residence permit and registration after arrival
  • Apply for the residence permit within eight working days after arrival for your long study stay; collecting a kit alone does not complete the application.
  • Follow the postal submission and Questura appointment instructions that apply, and retain the application and payment receipts.
  • Keep the passport, visa, study records and accommodation details available. Check the rules before travelling while a permit application is pending.
  • Complete enrolment, tax-code and applicable address formalities, maintain health cover and prepare for renewals before expiry.
Consistent evidence and refusal decisions
  • Use accurate, consistent records for identity, academics, funding, accommodation and purpose of study. Explain material changes and any disclosures requested by the form.
  • If refused, read the written reasons and the stated review or appeal procedure and deadline. Seek appropriately qualified advice where needed.
  • A fresh application should address the actual issues with supporting evidence. Payment, admission or a corrected document cannot guarantee a different result.
Universitaly validation is a preparation step, not a visa decision.

For applicants who need a study visa, follow the current pre-enrolment procedure for your higher-education course. Your institution validates the academic application; the Italian mission independently assesses the visa. Track university, pre-enrolment and visa deadlines separately.

Before you submit.

Talk to a counsellor
What is the Italy student visa financial requirement?

For university enrolment, MAECI publishes €10,179.85 for one year for academic years 2026–2027 and 2027–2028. Check the responsible mission’s accepted evidence. Tuition and other study costs belong in your full budget; other visa categories may use a different calculation.

Is Universitaly validation a visa approval?

No. Complete the pre-enrolment procedure where required and obtain the institution’s validation. The Italian mission independently assesses the visa application; admission or validation does not guarantee approval.

Do I need a Declaration of Value or CIMEA?

Follow the institution’s and mission’s specific requirements. A Declaration of Value, comparability statement and verification statement serve different purposes. Do not assume both routes are mandatory or that one automatically replaces another.

Can I use a bank guarantee as study-funding evidence?

MAECI states that bank guarantees and insurance guarantee policies are not suitable proof of adequate financial resources for study stays. Prepare the accepted personal, family or institutional funding evidence for your application.

What should I do within eight working days of arrival?

For a long study stay, apply for the permesso di soggiorno within eight working days after arrival. Follow the relevant postal-kit and Questura process, retain receipts and attend the appointment. Collecting a kit alone is not the completed application.

How much is the Italy national study-visa fee?

The published national study-visa fee is €50. Confirm the current local-currency amount and any exemption before payment. Service-centre charges, qualification documents, insurance and residence-permit costs are separate.

Can I work during or after my studies?

A study residence permit generally permits up to 20 hours of employment per week and 1,040 hours per year. Eligible graduates may apply for a separate job-search route. Eligible study-to-work conversion is outside annual Flows Decree quotas under the 2023 reform, but still requires the relevant conditions and application.

Can my family join me on my Italy student visa?

Family members need their own eligible route and evidence. Check current residence-duration, income, housing and relationship requirements and any applicable exceptions. A student visa does not automatically give a spouse or children permission to accompany you.
