Maintenance, tuition & application costs

Give each amount its purpose.

Maintenance evidence supports your permit application. Tuition, application charges and practical arrival expenses belong in your full study budget as well.

Student maintenance · applications made in 2026

Plan for the period you request.

Per month · Swedish kronorSEK 10,656

Confirm the amount for your application year, including any family and eligible reductions. Tuition and actual living costs need separate planning.

Family additions and eligible reductions

Published family additions are SEK 4,440 per month for a spouse or cohabiting partner and SEK 2,664 per child. The family’s overall maintenance is assessed.

For applications in 2026, qualifying free food can reduce the amount by SEK 2,960 per month, and qualifying free housing by SEK 4,736. Required confirmation and eligibility rules apply.

Admission and residence: separate decisions

Provider admission

  • Accepted qualifications and course-specific subjects
  • English evidence and any academic assessment
  • Admission decisions, tuition and scholarship terms

Study residence permit

  • Final admission to eligible full-time study
  • Applicable tuition and maintenance evidence
  • Passport, insurance and any accompanying-family requirements

University admission and the residence permit are separate decisions. Paying tuition does not by itself guarantee a permit.

Maintenance sources and accessible funds
  • Use the maintenance amount for your application year and the entire period requested. Tuition and practical arrival costs are separate.
  • Document the funding route: accessible personal assets, scholarship, qualifying sponsorship, student grant or loan, or existing employment income under the applicable rules.
  • A job offer alone is not accepted as employment-income evidence. Follow the requirements for an employment certificate and payslips; an unconfirmed future job is not secure study funding.
  • Any reduction for institution-provided food or housing needs the required confirmation. Do not subtract informal support without checking eligibility.
Support from relatives and institutional sponsorship
  • Private individuals are not accepted as sponsors in Migrationsverket’s sponsorship category.
  • Money provided by relatives must instead be transferred to an accessible account in your name and documented as personal bank assets under the applicable rules.
  • Qualifying institutional or organisational sponsorship uses its own evidence. Check ownership, access, amounts and payment timing for your chosen funding route.
Insurance and healthcare arrangements
  • If admitted to studies lasting less than one year, you need to have or have applied for comprehensive health insurance for your stay. Check any university-arranged cover.
  • The required coverage includes medical care, hospitalisation, emergency dental care and medical repatriation. Check the policy and evidence against current instructions.
  • For study lasting at least one year, check population-registration eligibility and healthcare arrangements with Skatteverket and the university. Do not assume a personal identity number or cover is automatic.
Family applications and supporting records
  • Eligible family members may apply with you or under the applicable later-application procedure. Check the current definition, relationship evidence and each person’s requirements.
  • Prepare the family’s maintenance and any required insurance. Passport validity and the student’s permission affect the family application.
  • For children, check custody and consent records where applicable. Confirm each family member’s own permission and work conditions.
Passport presentation, interviews and biometrics
  • A permit cannot outlast passport validity. Follow the passport-copy and identity-check instructions for your case.
  • Migrationsverket may request passport presentation or an interview before deciding. Do not assume every application is decided on documents alone.
  • Follow the instructions for fingerprints, photographs, permit-card production and travel. Do not assume these all happen only after a decision.
Student employment under the June 2026 rules
Confirm the conditions attached to your permission before working.
Permits granted from June 11, 2026For bachelor’s and master’s studies, the general semester limit is 15 hours per week.
Summer monthsJune, July and August have different rules permitting work beyond the semester limit.
Specific exceptionsCertain education-linked or university roles and completed-study circumstances can qualify for exceptions.
Earlier permits and extensionsCheck the transitional rules for your grant and any extension.
Before starting workConfirm the rules for your permit and work arrangement. A job does not remove your study obligations.
Seeking work after completing your studies
  • Eligible bachelor’s and master’s graduates can apply for a permit of up to 12 months to seek employment or explore starting a business.
  • Check completed-study, current-permission, application-timing, maintenance and insurance requirements before your study permit expires.
  • Doctoral and research situations can have different rules. Use the category that fits your study.
  • Later employment or residence applications have separate conditions. Graduation does not guarantee a permit, job or permanent residence.
Study progress and changes to your course
  • Academic progress matters for maintaining and extending a study permit. June 2026 changes raised the requirements for affected bachelor’s and master’s students.
  • Keep enrolment and results records. If your study situation changes, follow Migrationsverket’s instructions and discuss the academic plan with your university.
  • Do not assume a change of institution, level or programme leaves every permit condition unchanged.
Address reporting, registration and personnummer
  • Address-notification duties can apply when a permit is granted and when you change address. Check the 30-day rule, transitional arrangements and the population-registration exception.
  • Skatteverket decides population registration and any personnummer. Follow the current moving-to-Sweden process and provide the evidence requested.
  • A residence-permit card, population registration and a personal identity number are different records. Plan practical arrangements with the university.
Processing delays and deferral planning
  • Processing varies with the application and required checks. Published estimates do not promise a decision date.
  • Arrange tuition confirmation and suitable evidence early. Follow requests and keep your course dates current.
  • If timing threatens your start, discuss deferral with the university and update your file as instructed. Follow the current application instructions and document-dating requirements.
Consistent records and refusal decisions
  • Review personal details, course dates, tuition and funding records for consistency before submitting.
  • Use genuine documents and disclose relevant history accurately. Respond to requests by the stated deadline.
  • If refused, read the decision for reasons, appeal options and deadlines. Seek appropriately qualified advice when needed before deciding on a further application.
June 2026 changes: work, progress and address reporting

For bachelor’s and master’s permits granted on or after June 11, 2026, the general semester work limit is 15 hours per week, with exceptions and summer rules. The changes also tighten study-progress requirements and introduce address-reporting duties. Check which rules apply to your permit and any extension.

Your questions, answered

Before you submit.

Practical answers about maintenance, insurance, checks and your study-permit conditions.

Talk to a counsellor
Is this a student visa or a residence permit?

For longer higher-education studies, most non-EU/EEA applicants need a residence permit for studies. The applicable entry and permit-card arrangements are separate checks. Use the category that matches your course and circumstances.

How much maintenance funding is required?

For applications made in 2026, the published student requirement is SEK 10,656 per month for the period requested. Tuition is separate. Family additions and any eligible reductions require their own checks; confirm the amount for your application year.

Can my parents sponsor my maintenance?

Private individuals are not accepted as sponsors under Migrationsverket’s sponsorship category. Support from relatives must be documented as accessible personal bank assets in your name under the applicable rules. Institutional sponsorship is a separate funding method.

Can employment income count toward maintenance?

Existing employment income can be considered with the required employment evidence and payslips. A job offer alone is insufficient. Do not build your study plan around an unconfirmed future job, and follow your permit’s work restrictions.

Can I work unlimited hours during my studies?

Not as a general rule. For bachelor’s and master’s permits granted on or after June 11, 2026, the general limit is 15 hours per week during semesters. Summer rules, specific exceptions and transitional arrangements require separate checks.

Do I need comprehensive health insurance?

For studies shorter than one year, check the requirement to have or have applied for comprehensive cover and any university-arranged policy. For longer study, check population-registration eligibility and healthcare arrangements; cover is not automatic simply because you have admission.

Will there be an interview or passport appointment?

Migrationsverket may require passport presentation or an interview before a decision. Fingerprint, photograph and card instructions depend on the case. Follow the requests you receive rather than assuming a universal sequence.

Can I remain after completing my degree?

Eligible bachelor’s and master’s graduates may apply for up to 12 months to seek work or explore starting a business. It is a separate application with requirements for completed study, timing, funds and insurance. Other study and research categories can differ.
